Philip Higham &
Cellist Philip Higham is one of the inaugural young artists benefiting from the Philip Langridge Mentoring Scheme:
Like many impressionable teenage cellists of my generation, I grew up listening - mostly in awe - to recordings of Steven Isserlis. My first teacher, Ruth Beauchamp, singled out both his unique, exquisite sound quality and his vivid musical temperament as exemplary.
As my own musical voice and my cello playing developed in different and necessary ways, particularly under the guidance of wonderful teachers at the Royal Northern College of Music, Steven's performances remained a constant source of inspiration to me.
So naturally I was thrilled to be a part of the Philip Langridge Mentoring Scheme, when it emerged that Steven was willing to take me on as "mentee" (his term!) To develop a fuller understanding of everything I had long admired, but with the benefit of all my own work behind me and my own artistic convictions, has been both enormously enriching and necessarily challenging.
