Richard Uttley - Biography
Richard Uttley has been recognised for his ‘musical intelligence and pristine facility’ (International Record Review) and featured as a Rising Star in BBC Music Magazine. His 2010 London début, in the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room, was described by The Times as ‘a brilliant recital’. He was awarded 1st prizes in the British Contemporary Piano Competition 2006 and the Haverhill Competition 2010, and was selected for representation by Young Classical Artists Trust in 2011. He has performed as soloist in the UK's major halls and his playing is regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
Richard studied at Clare College, Cambridge (graduating with a Double First in Music), and with Martin Roscoe at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. A passionate exponent of new music, Richard has commissioned works from Timothy Jackson, Matthew Kaner, Mark Simpson and Chris Willis, with support from the Arthur Bliss Trust, Britten-Pears Foundation and RVW Trust.
A committed exponent of new music, In 2014 Richard released a third CD - Ghosts & Mirrors, including Marvin Wolfthal’s epic Lulu Fantasy - to critical acclaim. He has recorded and performed for the BBC, as part of a Proms Plus Composer Portrait on Louis Andriessen, and in Total Immersion Days on Stockhausen, Ferneyhough and Knussen and released two discs of 20th and 21st Century piano music for UH Recordings.
At the opening of the 2014/15 season Richard attended Open Chamber Music at IMS Prussia Cove. He went on to perform music by Lindberg in a BBC Symphony Orchestra concert broadcast by Radio 3, appeared at Manchester International Festival with Mark Simpson featured on BBC4, and premiered new works by Rolf Hind and Matthew Kaner at the Cheltenham Festival and St. John’s Smith Square. Other highlights include three recitals at Wigmore Hall; appearances at Galway Mid-Winter and Presteigne Festivals; the Commonwealth Games 2014 (in a new work by Dobrinka Tabakova); masterclasses with Thomas Adès at IMS Prussia Cove and recording music by Ben Foskett for the NMC label.
Richard is was mentored by Rolf Hind, through the RPS Philip Langridge Mentoring Scheme and the recipient of a Help Musicians UK Emerging Excellence Award. He is also a Trustee of New Dots, a charity for contemporary music.
